SXSW Report - Capsula (Thursday)

I won’t lie. The last week took a lot out of me. Between work and volunteering at the SXSW Trade Show, it’s a wonder I had anything left in the tank to go see bands at night. But as this was my first SX in years that I wasn’t part of an all-day radio broadcast, I’d psyched myself up to go at this year’s fest with almost everything I had and yet, I still couldn’t do it all.

Wednesday was out from the get-go due to a work commitment - one I was more than happy to take, thankyouverymuch - so, it was on to Thursday. My friend (and avid TBB reader) Giselle sent me a note saying that Surf City had to pull out of the festival, so that left my 8p slot open. Instead of scrambling for a replacement, I simply decided to camp out at the club where my 9p pick, Las Robertas, were playing and boy, am I glad I did.

I’d never heard of Capsula before tonight, although I came to learn that they were SX veterans. A garage rock trio from Spain (via Argentina), they hit the tiny stage armed with songs from the just released In The Land of Silver Souls and played like they were headlining an arena. With a big sound, big licks, and 50 years of rockstar cliches in their arsenal, they just came out and ROCKED it. Singing in English, Martin Guevara must’ve studied a lifetime’s worth of Iggy Pop videos, as he preened and shimmied across the stage. The show’s highlight was his parting the crowd and running his guitar strings along the bar while accepting a swig of beer in the process. Top notch, sir.
Capsula certainly weren’t anything you hadn’t heard before but in bringing their A-game, to me, they epitomized what SXSW should be about: stumbling upon a band, being pleasantly surprised, and emerging a fan. Here’s a relatively obscure band from Spain - not exactly a hotbed of rock - for which playing SXSW is probably considered a career highlight. Perhaps mine is a minority opinion, but fuck secret shows (Foo Fighters) and last-minute gigs by superstars (Kanye West) looking to slipstream on SX’s notoriety. There were 2000 bands in Austin last week and I’m glad Capsula was one of them. Their ear-to-ear smiles, including that of sultry bassist Coni Duchess, were memorable. Captured at random. Capsula Playing 'The Rise And Fall Of Ziggy Stardust'

Capsula played live in Bilbao at Teatro Campos the whole David Bowie’s 72 pre punk pure glitter rock classic album ‘The Rise and Fall Of Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars’. The band recreate song by song and played them in the same order as the album, having as reference the previously works done by Flaming Lips with ‘Dark Side Of The Moon’, Pussy Galore with ‘Exile On Main Street’, Chuck Prophet with ‘London Calling’. Including Gaizka Insunza (Audience) on guitar, piano and Iosu Urkidi (Eureka Hot 4) on sax, the show was full in attendance.

Capsula ‒ Hit ‘n’ Miss (MP3)

For me, Capsula’s 2009 album, Rising Mountains, was like a breath of fresh air and a throwback to late 70′s rock at the very same time. I won’t lie: I heard it first on one of those websites where you’re not supposed to go and that are said to be contributing to the demise of the music industry. Otherwise, though, I might never have heard of this trio out of Bilbao. For years — since 1997 — the band, comprised of Coni Duchess (bass & vocals), Martin Guevara (guitar & vocals), and more recently Ignacio “Nacho” Villarejo (drums), had been working hard, releasing albums in first their native Buenos Aires and later in their adopted home of Bilbao, Spain. Like hundreds of other bands, they tried to get noticed in the U.S. by attending SXSW in 2008 and 2009. Yet despite having won the heart of notable Rolling Stone writer David Fricke, Rising Mountains saw no distribution in the U.S. But what an amazing album it is. From among the hundred or so albums I heard that year, it stood out as my number one pick. Beyond its mix of explosive American punk rock that germinated in the dive bars like CBGB in New York and swirling psychedelia that has fueled newer bands like Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and The Brian Jonestown Massacre, the album is full of memorable and dynamic songs. Upon hearing it, our Music Director, Don Yates, immediately added to our heavy rotation.

And now, Capsula have outdone themselves again. In The Land Of Silver Souls, their second full-length available only through the excellent Spanish label BCore Disc, is in Don’s own words “even better than their explosive last record, combining loud, crunchy guitars and a pummeling rhythm section on a variety of fiery songs incorporating Sonic Youth noise-rock, high-energy garage and blistering psych-rock.” Today’s featured song is an easy first single. While some of the other songs have a more dynamic buildup, “Hit ‘n’ Miss,” starts with a Clash-like opening riff and never lets up. As Martin wails and slides, Nacho pounds the living jeezus out of his kit, and Coni entices with her backing vocals, you’re riding on high octane all the way though. Mixed and produced by John Agnello (Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Hold Steady) at Headgear Studios in Brooklyn, the album is through and through a masterful dark, seductive delight.

Hopefully, we in the U.S. will soon get another chance to see Capsula live. Coni, Martin and Nacho are stunning performers. In particular, Martin’s stage theatrics — from practically swallowing the mic like a reanimated Lux Interior to running the fretboard of his guitar on pretty much anything including onstage amps, bar countertops and even KEXP contributing photographer Jim Bennett’s camera lens — are not to be missed. This month, they are performing select shows in Spain, such as the David Bowie tribute, “The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars,” this Thursday in Bilbao. Gonna take a pretty educated guess here and say that Capsula frontman Martin Guevara wore out the grooves in at least two Stooges records. And somewhere during that time, he decided that if he couldn’t underweigh Iggy Pop (and he’s clearly trying) then he could out rock him (also trying … and coming close). The Basque trio was nothing short of incendiary for its 30-minute Thursday showcase set at Nuvola. Putting the Iberian Kim Gordon - Capsula bassist Coni Duchess - in an LBD with leopard print tights doesn’t hurt a bit. It was impressive for a couple of reasons. First, they were fighting technical issues; they lost sound twice and even had to take a couple minutes’ break to rectify things. Second, Guevara came close to Tufnel-ian cliches more than once. But seeing as the nuances of English still escape the frontman - he said “Goodnight, Austin” after the opening song - maybe cliches are still cool when translated into Spanish. To wit: playing guitar with your teeth is kinda played. But using the marble corner of the bar to play slide with, that’s capital-A Awesome. Even without the theatrics, on sheer raw power alone, Capsula had sold themselves to all in attendance.
